Large ascomycetous fungus producing perithecia.
80+ species. Ubiquitous, cosmopolitan.
It is found on a variety of substrates containing cellulose including paper and plant compost. It has been found on paper in sheetrock. Chaetomium is often found growing in soil, seeds, cellulose substrates, dung, woody and straw material. Inside it is often found growing on damp sheetrock/ drywall/ gypsum board. Also can be found growing on subfloor.
It is reported to be allergenic. Can produce an Acremonium like state on fungal media. It is a potential allergen but has not been well studied although some individuals may experience hay fever or asthma.
Some species can produce specific toxins such as chaetomin, sterigmatocystin and chetoglobosins.
These molds can lead to rare cases of onychomycosis (nail infection).
Industrial uses are unknown.
Chaetomium can be identified via air and direct sampling.
